In a week’s time citizens from the four macro-regions gather in Budapest to approve the result of their joint effort: the text of a proposal for a macro-regional civil strategy. But it would be a mistake to think that the function of this representative gathering is confined to the adoption of a broadly consulted and well-prepared document.
The ambition of European House Budapest, the host organisation is obviously higher: it aims to maintain the momentum and put into practice under the current unpredictable international circumstances several place-based and citizens-led ideas reinvigorating and enriching the macro-regional idea.
In this context 2024 will be a testing stone, a pilot project period when a new, open and inclusive macro-regional civil network is established and with its supportive framework will address issues as how
- to promote the pro-European result of the upcoming European Parliamentary elections;
- to establish an inclusive, transparent and institutionalised citizens’ dialogue system across macro-regions;
- to organise a citizens’ panel in a macro-regional setting;
- to develop synergies between EU macro-regional and cohesion policies orto bring under one roof young people from the four macro-regions for exchange of information, best practices and for training;

just to name a few ideas surfaced already during the preparatory process leading to the Budapest meeting. Our doors are open and it is the conviction of European House Budapest that by joint efforts of interested and committed civil partners and other stakeholders a new and promising chapter will begin in the multifaceted civil involvement in EU macro-regional policy making.
