Biochar and green carbon from biomass residues can make a significant contribution to reduce this dependency. The project Alps4GreenC contributes to the conditions for energy sufficiency and climate protection of the region by setting the scene for a transnational utilisation of biomass residues. Through policy recommendations and the pilot production of green carbon, the project investigates the opportunities for biomass conversion and proposes transnational biochar-based value chains. This first transnational collaboration for the establishment of biochar-production value chain will enable to identify and upgrade the appropriate technologies for biomass conversion and to fully realise the shift to green, post-carbon approaches .Details

It’s about doing the first steps to even get to know each other and then to learn whatever there is to learn on an individual base, comprehending that though those people speak different languages, wear other clothes, or eat strange meals, they are in essence not so much different to the people at home. As it is already often complicated to WORK with people (and not just talk) you know in a culture you are familiar with, it is just natural to expect even more troubles when working with people from other countries. Latvia, RIGAS TEHNISKA UNIVERSITATE, Latvia, UNIVERSITETET I TROMSOE - NORGES ARKTISKE UNIVERSITET NorwayStakeholder consultations in the field of societal security in the BSR had identified the need for closer cooperation between experts, practitioners and policy makers on the one side, and HEI/ academia on the other. Increased cooperation would be needed to establish missing connections between policy, practice, education and research. The consortium applied so that NEEDS could aim to strengthen the quality, attractiveness and scope of education in societal security through tackling the mismatches between education focus, and the knowledge needs of the field. The main priority of NEEDS was to address said skills gap and mismatch. The project had a needs-based approach. The focus of the project was to identify, with the help of experts and practitioners, the key topics related to societal security, especially resilience, and where there was a need for more knowledge for the next generation to have a more sophisticated skill set and be better prepared to deal with tomorrow’s societal security challenges. NEEDS responded to the lack of institutionalised cooperation and a widely used communication platform to properly facilitate this conversation between HEIs and practitioners and experts, and the creation of education materials.Details

One of the 43 Actions in the Action Plan adopted by the EU Commission and the 8 member states in the region is addressing vulnerable youth, not in education, employment, or training (NEET). To provide more comprehensive and coherent support for this target group, so-called Youth Guidance Centres have been developed across Europe whereby multi-professional teams deliver integrated services. These Guidance Centres are not yet established in all countries in the Baltic Sea Region. EUSBSR is spreading best practice and co-create solutions in relation to Youth Guidance Centres. This project is contributing to this process. The reason behind this project was the identified need to strengthen the coordinator function for Youth Guidance Centres, to fill the competence gaps, by identifying the competencies required to manage a multi-professional environment with integrated services for youth. The project has developed a competence profile with a curriculum responding to the concrete needs. Furthermore, tested the curriculum in a one-year programme. 21EUSALPSustainable initiatives for the AlpsSustainable initiatives for the Alps09/2019-01/202258792,60Gymnasium Berchtesgaden Germany, Biotehniski center Naklo Slovenia, Lycée Général et technologique Agricole FranceThe project aimed at gathering initiatives for sustainable development in the alpine region, especially in national parks. The impacts of human beings, considering climate change, agriculture, tourism, biodiversity and nature conservation in 3 countries (Germany, Slovenia and France), were analyzed and compared in mutual exchange. The participating students became aware that the challenges in their homeland are similar to those in other countries and can only be mastered in cooperation. In doing so, young people perceived themselves as Europeans who actively use foreign languages to exchange information and, in addition, realised their cultural particularities. An important goal was to understand the protected areas of the Alps as a valuable component of a common cultural space, which has similar natural spatial conditions across national borders. Young people should experience international cooperation and gain knowledge of common cultural heritage in order to work together in finding solutions for similar problems. We learned that seeing other places in Europe and meeting foreign pupils personally is necessary to create a sense of common European identity.Details

New uses such as marine aquaculture or wind energy generation could conflict with traditional sea activities like fishing, tourism and leisure. Furthermore, integrated planning in marine areas and on land was often not coherent. This coherence was a key challenge and at the same time – a precondition for Blue Growth. Another challenge was to recognise the relationships and inter-dependencies between marine ecosystems, landscapes, social and cultural values and economic sectors by considering interactions between land and sea. To achieve a change, national, regional and local authorities, as well as stakeholders of various sectors needed to strengthen cooperation across borders and exchange knowledge to foster Blue Growth. There was also a need to raise awareness, knowledge and skills to enhance Blue Growth initiatives and integrated development in coastal areas as well as to balance the development of new sea uses with coastal community interests by improving coastal governance. New flexible governance practices for coastal management were much required to solve common land-sea interaction challenges.Details

Staff shortages, financial restrictions and insufficient use of new digital technologies are part of the problem in the whole DR. Social entrepreneurial trainings and few recently established social innovation labs aim to facilitate innovation of new services/products in the DR to tackle such societal challenges. Building upon these approaches, the project aims to establish specialized macro-regional D-Care Lab innovation structures to enable social service providers, product developers and social start-ups to design and implement better and innovative home care services and products for elderly persons, people with disabilities and children with special needsDetails

Greece, INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SARAJEVO, IUAV University of Venice, Solar Info Community srl (Benefit Enterprise) Italy, University of Novi Sad Faculty of Technical Science, University of Tirana, University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and ComputingThe renewable energy sector in Adriatic Region is on the rise. A mindful and up-to-date approach to renewables can also unlock marginal areas' potential and ensure equitable energy access. Still, without proper expertise, this growth puts the value and identity of landscapes at risk and, generally, the provisioning of key nature goods and services. To avoid pitfalls and reap the benefits, various strategies must work in parallel: technological development, academic research, capacity building, and policy design. The cultural and mental shift required is significant and needs to be fast and effective. To tackle these challenges, ADRION TRAINEE raises multidisciplinary competencies and skills on the topic of Renewable Energy by designing a joint “Master’s Degree in Renewable Energy” (in English). It contributes to laying down the basis for enhanced cooperation between EU and IPA countries, as the support to the EU enlargement process is central in the new programming period while encouraging the effective use of future EU funds for research and innovation in renewable energy.Details

As the circulating vehicles are largely still depending on fossil fuels (currently there are approx. only 4 million of e-vehicles on the EU roads, compared to EU target of 30 million by 2030), the social re-evaluation of the use of car increases gas emissions and air pollutants, in a context where the transport sector is responsible for approx. ¼ of the global greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere, whilst air pollutants cause yearly approx. 400.000 premature deaths in Europe, according to EEA reports, especially in densely inhabited areas. Due to many different factors (circulation of obsolete transportation means; lack of sustainable mobility planning capacity; scarcity of data, e.g., on air quality in many IPA countries, as revealed by SMILE’s surveys), many ADRION regions/cities are hotspots for the above-described problems. In such a context, SMILE PLUS intends to update and spread the main tool resulting from SMILE, namely the mobility scenarios as support to new transport policies in congested urban areas.Details

In addition to it, new planning period started in 2021, so it is high time to formulate how we see future of Europe. That is the central issue FEPE addresses. Future of Europe is an immensely complex issue. One must decide about main targets, since he who wants all, will have nothing. The main targets and a vision for the future were formulated in the document called Next Generation EU. From those complex objectives, FEPE will address three themes: green Europe (in a way: green economy), healthy Europe and strong Europe. Discussions will be organised in three steps: lectures and Q&A sessions, discussions and debates and reports to the plenary session. In order to ease the discussions of those crucially important but heavy and complex targets, political discussion steps will alternate with multicultural performances presented mostly by the participant communities themselves. Those presentations will have manifold objectives: apart from relaxation and friendship building, they will present examples of multicolour Europe, of differences and unity, of strength in diversity, of tolerance. With those main characteristics, FEPE will fully blend into overall tasks EU has fixed, will build our common Europe. With discussing the future of Europe, we understand that the future is as to how we shape it - i.e., we identify with the common goals, and thus we become better European citizens. FEPE mobilises 195 foreign participants and more than 1000 direct ones; indirectly will reach more than 85.000 persons. The fundamental aim is to identify with the selected hot components of the future of Europe.Details
